When do fares actually move?
Everyone has a theory about when to book a cruise. We have 53 days of daily captures across 275 sailings, so here is what the fares themselves did — no folklore.
The short answer
Margaritaville at Sea fares sit still until roughly three months out, then soften sharply in the 30-to-90-day window — 14 of 28 sailings in that range fell while we watched, with a median drop of about -2%. Further out than five months, almost nothing happens: 96 of 200 sailings didn't move at all. Inside 30 days it becomes a coin flip.
Median price change, by how far out the sailing is
Measured on each sailing's cheapest tracked cabin, all-in, over our 53-day observation window. Negative means the fare fell.
| Days to departure | Sailings | Median change | Fell / flat / rose | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inside 30 days | 13 | +15.1% | 5 / 0 / 8 | |
| 31–60 days out | 13 | -5% | 8 / 0 / 5 | |
| 61–90 days out | 15 | 0% | 6 / 5 / 4 | |
| 91–150 days out | 34 | +0.2% | 7 / 11 / 16 | |
| 151–270 days out | 74 | 0% | 25 / 27 / 22 | |
| 271+ days out | 126 | 0% | 39 / 69 / 18 |
"Flat" means the fare moved less than 1% either way. Buckets with small sailing counts are noisier — the two discount buckets are shown separately above rather than merged, so you can judge them yourself.
What this means if you're booking
📅 More than 5 months out
Prices barely move (96 of 200 sailings unchanged). Book for the cabin you want, not for the price — there's no evidence you're paying a premium for booking early.
🎯 30–90 days out
The discount window. This is where 14 of 28 tracked sailings fell. If your dates are flexible, this is where watching pays.
🎲 Inside 30 days
A gamble. Roughly as many rose as fell in our sample. Cheap cabins sell out, so the lowest available price can jump even when the sailing is discounting.
🔔 Either way
Every voyage page carries a verdict badge and its full tracked history, so you can see where today's price sits against everything we've recorded for that sailing.
How honest is this?
Straight answer: it's a young dataset. We have 53 days of captures and 275 sailings with at least 10 readings each. That's enough to see the shape, not enough to promise it repeats. The 30–90 day buckets in particular rest on 28 sailings between them.
We publish the sample size next to every number precisely so you can discount it appropriately. This page rebuilds itself every morning, and because we keep departed sailings instead of deleting them, the evidence gets stronger every day rather than resetting. Come back in a season and these numbers will mean a lot more.
